Adding SlakBot to your server
Where to find it: slakbot.nl → 'Add to your server' button, or in the panel → '➕ Add bot'
To add SlakBot you need the Manage Server permission on that server. Discord shows which permissions SlakBot asks for. Leave them ticked, or some features won't work. Once added, SlakBot picks a language by itself: Dutch if your Discord server's primary language is Dutch, English otherwise.
Steps
- Go to slakbot.nl and click 'Add to your server'.
- In Discord, pick your server from the list.
- Leave the permissions ticked and click Authorize.
- Then type /setup in a channel on your server.
- Your server isn't in Discord's list? Then you don't have the Manage Server permission there.
- The website button doesn't ask for Administrator. That means a few features need an extra permission later. See 'Permissions SlakBot needs'.
- The buttons in the panel do ask for Administrator. SlakBot then has every permission straight away.
- In Discord you can only set a primary language on a Community server. On an ordinary server SlakBot therefore picks English. You can change that under Language / Taal.
Logging in to the panel
Where to find it: panel.slakbot.nl
You log in with your Discord account. SlakBot asks Discord for your username and avatar, your server list and your member info on those servers, such as your roles. It never sees your password or your messages. You can only manage servers where you have the Manage Server permission, or that you own. A moderator role without that permission gives no access to the panel.
Steps
- Open panel.slakbot.nl. You're sent straight to Discord.
- Click Authorize in Discord.
- You now land on 'Your Servers'.
- Getting a message that you don't have the 'Manage Server' permission on any server? Ask the server owner for it.
- You stay logged in for one day. After that you log in again.
- SlakBot keeps re-checking your permission. If you lose Manage Server, you can't change anything after about a minute.
Choosing a server
Where to find it: Panel → Your Servers
'Your Servers' lists the servers where you have Manage Server and SlakBot is already in. Click a server to open its settings. If SlakBot isn't in any of your servers yet, you see your servers here with '➕ Add SlakBot'. Pick one and add SlakBot. When you come back to this tab, that server shows up in the list.
Steps
- Click the server you want to set up.
- Want to switch later? Click your server's name at the top left of the panel and pick another one.
- A server you just added isn't showing? Refresh the page. If that doesn't help, log out and back in.
- Use '➕ Add bot to a new server' to add SlakBot to another server.
Overview
Where to find it: Panel → Overview (the first page when you open a server)
The Overview is your home page. It shows your features by group, each with a dot: On, On, but something is still missing, Off, or The bot has stopped. At the top are the things you need to fix yourself, such as a feature that's on but has no channel yet. If SlakBot is missing the Manage Roles permission, you'll see that here too.
Steps
- Open your server. You land on Overview automatically.
- Work through the 'things you need to fix yourself' list from top to bottom.
- Click the button next to a line to go to the right page.
- Looking for a setting? Use the search box on the left.
- Pages under 'To look at' have no dot. There is nothing to turn on or off there.
- On the old panel? There a feature shows ON, OFF or INCOMPLETE. On streamer servers you also see the 'Get started' checklist there, with your next Twitch steps.
- Want to go back to the old panel? Click 'Back to the old panel' at the bottom left.
Language / Taal
Where to find it: Panel → Bot & content → Language / Taal
Here you choose whether SlakBot uses Dutch or English on this server. That covers command replies, embeds, welcome messages and livestream alerts. The panel switches to the same language.
Steps
- Open Language / Taal.
- Under 'Bot language', pick Nederlands or English.
- Click 'Save'.
- Is the panel still in the old language afterwards? Refresh the page.
- The bot uses the new language straight away.
- Only Dutch and English are available.
- Text you wrote yourself, such as your own welcome message, is not translated by SlakBot.
- Slash command names follow each person's own Discord app language, not this setting. With English Discord you see /botname, for example; with any other language you see the Dutch name /botnaam.
Appearance
Where to find it: Panel → Bot & content → Appearance
Appearance controls how SlakBot's messages look, not its name or profile picture. Under 'Colors and shape' you pick the card colors and the avatar shape: Round, Rounded or Square. Under 'What each message looks like' you choose Card, Embed or Plain text for each message. A card is an image in your colors, an embed is the ordinary Discord block, and plain text is a single line without formatting.
Steps
- Open Appearance.
- Pick the colors.
- Choose the avatar shape.
- For each message choose Card, Embed or Plain text: Rank card (/rank), Leaderboard (/top), Welcome message, Level-up alert, Shop (/shop), YouTube alert, Farewell message, Goal bar and Supporter wall.
- Click Save.
- By default everything is a Card with an orange accent color. Only the YouTube alert is an Embed by default.
- Plain text doesn't work for the YouTube alert: you get an Embed instead.
- A card is an image, so SlakBot needs the Attach files permission in that channel.
- A choice for a feature that's off only shows once you turn that feature on.
Bot name (/botname)
Where to find it: Discord → /botname
Use /botname to give SlakBot a name that only applies on your server. Anyone with Manage Server can do this. SlakBot remembers the name and puts it back after a restart. A profile picture per server isn't possible: the avatar is the same on every server and only SlakBot's maker can change it.
Steps
- Type /botname in a channel on your server.
- Enter the new name under name, up to 32 characters.
- Press Enter. Only you can see the confirmation.
- There's no bot name field in the panel. You can only do this with the command.
- Want the normal name back? Type /botname name:SlakBot.
- If you then change the name in Discord itself, SlakBot puts the /botname name back after a restart. So always use /botname.
- Getting an error? Give SlakBot the Change Nickname permission.
Commands
/botname name:<new name>
Gives SlakBot its own name on this server.
/setup
Where to find it: Discord → /setup
/setup is your starting point in Discord. It shows what's already set up for YouTube, Twitch, Welcome and Moderation, with buttons to the panel. Only you can see this message. Three quick-start buttons each turn something on in one click: 'Sample rank card' turns on Leveling, 'Welcome here' turns on welcome messages in this channel, and 'Enable Swarm shield' turns on Anti-Scam.
Steps
- Type /setup in a channel on your server. For 'Welcome here', do that in your welcome channel.
- Click '🎛️ Open dashboard', or 📺 YouTube, 🟣 Twitch, 👋 Welcome or 🛡️ Moderation to go straight to that page.
- Or click a quick-start button.
- Only members with Manage Server can use /setup and the quick-start buttons.
- /setup doesn't create channels or roles. You pick those in the panel.
- 'Sample rank card' and 'Welcome here' post an example in the channel. Everyone can see it.
- /setup only works in a server, not in a direct message.
Commands
/setup
Shows what's set up, with buttons to the panel and quick-start buttons.
/help
Where to find it: Discord → /help
/help lists every SlakBot command you're allowed to use on this server. They're in three groups: For everyone, Moderation and Admin. Commands you don't have permission for are hidden. At the bottom is a link to the panel. Only you can see the reply.
Steps
- Type /help in a channel on your server.
- Everyone on the server can use /help, so a viewer only sees the commands they're allowed to use.
- The list shows each command's Dutch name and description, also on English servers. In English Discord you type the English name, for example /botname instead of /botnaam.
Commands
/help
Shows all commands you're allowed to use here.
Permissions SlakBot needs
Where to find it: Discord → Server Settings → Roles → SlakBot
SlakBot can only do what its role in Discord allows. In every channel where it posts, it needs View Channel, Send Messages, Embed Links and Attach Files. To hand out roles it needs Manage Roles, and the SlakBot role has to sit above those roles. For moderation it needs Manage Messages, Kick Members, Ban Members and Timeout Members. If a permission is missing, that feature stays silent in that channel, because Discord blocks it without a message.
Steps
- In Discord, open Server Settings → Roles.
- Drag the SlakBot role above the roles it should hand out or moderate.
- Click the SlakBot role and turn on the permissions your features need.
- Is a channel private? Check that channel's Permissions too.
- Refresh the panel. If everything is right, the warnings are gone.
- Tickets, Voice Channels, Counter channels, setting up the Captcha gate automatically, /lockdown and /slowmode also need Manage Channels. Voice Channels also need Move Members, and Invites needs Manage Server. SlakBot doesn't get these through the website button, so add them yourself.
- The panel shows what's missing. Channels where SlakBot can't look or post and roles it can't give are locked, with the reason next to them, for example 'the bot can't see this channel', 'the bot can't post here' or 'this role sits above the bot'.
- A command usually replies with 'I'm missing the permissions needed to do this' when SlakBot lacks a permission.
- A role that an integration manages, such as the Nitro Booster role, can never be given by SlakBot.
- SlakBot can't moderate members whose role is as high as or higher than its own.
